Past Q&A

Q. Which no fee or low fee credit cards offer free roadside assistance as a benefit?
Gary

Mr. Thrifty answers:
Hi Gary,
We like the Canadian Tire World Elite Mastercard, which comes with the Canadian Tire Gold Roadside Assistance Plan. It has no annual fee. It is certainly worth it if you shop regularly at Canadian Tire or any of the stores in the Canadian Tire family. I’ve had the card for a few years and have taken advantage of this benefit a few times.

We detailed it in our review of no fee cards:

Q. Hi, are you aware that Nest Wealth, which operates on a flat-fee basis depending on the amount you invest, just increased their fees massively? For investors with $325K in funds or more, the fee is going from $80 per month to $150 per month — an increase of 87.5 per cent.
Can you suggest another robo-advisor with more reasonable fees for investors with $500K to $1M to invest?

Thanks.
J.

Mr. Thrifty answers:
Hi J.,
Outrageous increase!
The Globe & Mail maintains a database of robo-advisors here. It’s not constantly updated but should give you an idea of alternatives. As our article “Are Canadian Robo-Advisors Adding or Destroying Value?” points out, the fees charged by robo-advisors more or less negate their benefits. Constant rebalancing by robots has been overblown as a winning investment strategy. You’re actually better off rebalancing your portfolio yourself less frequently, either semi-annually or annually. It’s not that much time or effort to do it twice a year. The research on this point is summarized in the article linked above.
